Local Charter Boat Company Develops Unique Programs with AMCC
Crackerjack Sportfishing, based in Seward has been an AMCC business member since the program’s launch a year ago. This year, the charter boat business has adopted a unique business membership model where they ask guests on each charter trip to donate $10 to marine conservation, which directly supports AMCC’s work.
In his free time, Crackerjack owner and charter boat captain Andy Mezirow has been working on halibut conservation in Alaska’s charter boat community. In addition to educating his clients about halibut conservation, Mezirow has teamed up with AMCC, Alaska Sea Grant, and UAF on the Every Halibut Counts project to educate the charter fleet about halibut catch and release best practices. To read more about this project and other halibut conservation efforts, read this Seward City News piece.
Mezirow has also made the news recently for some of his work as an instructor at the AVTEC Maritime Training Center where he helps high school students prepare for the AVTEC captain’s exam.
