Watch Alaskan Chefs Battle at Crabfest!

AMCC Hosts Sustainable Seafood Throwdown in Kodiak

For most, next weekend is Memorial Day, but for residents of Kodiak, it is Crabfest! As part of the weekend’s festivities, AMCC will be hosting a Sustainable Seafood Throwdown on the mainstage on the Midway from 2-4pm on Saturday, May 24th.

In this Iron-Chef inspired event, local Chef Joel Chenet from Mill Bay Coffee & Pastries will face off against Chef Laura Cole from 229 Parks in Denali. The chefs will compete in this friendly culinary contest to see who can prepare the best locally-caught seafood dish using one secret ingredient. The chefs will have one hour to prepare, cook and plate their dish for a panel of judges. The winner of the event will compete in the Great Alaska Seafood Cookoff in Anchorage in September.

“The event is intended to celebrate Alaska’s amazing fisheries that help sustain coastal economies and fuel a unique culture and way of life that we hope can continue far into the future. Alaska seafood is prized by consumers and chefs across the globe and the sustainability of our seafood is something we as Alaskans should be proud of and continue to support,” said Kelly Harrell, Executive Director of the Alaska Marine Conservation Council.

The Throwdown event is hosted by AMCC and sponsored by the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute. The “Seafood Throwdown” format was developed by Cape Ann Farmers Market and the Northwest Atlantic Marine Alliance (NAMA). The east coast groups have continued the events as a way to promote the ecological importance of locally caught seafood in a fun, educational and community-driven fashion that engages the larger community in issues affecting our ocean, fishing communities, and fisheries, and now the trend is catching on in Alaska!

KMXT programmer Willie Bethea will emcee the event giving the play-by-play of all the action. Judges for the event will include: Senator Gary Stevens, Theresa Peterson, local Kodiak fisherwoman and AMCC Kodiak Outreach Coordinator, and Heather Preece, Pediatric Dietitian.
